Beware the Spam Scams

May 6, 2009

“If something sounds too good to be true it probably is.” Good advice today just as it was years ago when I first heard it. In fact it is better advice now. With the rise in E-Mail spam and online scams it is important to protect yourself.

A few examples of Spam Scams:

  • The Survey and Gift Scam- You receive an E-Mail from a financial institution asking you to participate in a short survey and in return they will deposit money into your bank account. You’re directed to an online survey page that asks some innoucuous  questions and then you’re asked for your account information. Don’t participate, the only thing you will receive is a smaller account balance, the scammers have withdrawn and not deposited.
  • The Get Quick Cash Scam- Quick and easy loans “All applications accepted. No credit check”. Call or apply online and once you’re approved (which you always are) you’re asked for your bank account information. Please don’t fall for this one.
  • The Investment Proposal Scam- The classic Nigerian E-Mail scam. You’re contacted by someone who urgently needs your help in transferring money out of their country in return for a percentage of the amount. They need to transfer the money from their account into yours, when in fact it is the other way around.
A good thing to remember is that unsolicited E-Mail schemes are never legitimate. If something sounds too good to be true, it’s probably a scam.

Tip of the Day

Giving out personal information via e-mail is kind of like stapling your car payment (In Cash) to the outside of the envelope and then mailing it. Chances are better than slim it will be stolen.
