Web Page Spoofing Scams

November 30, 2009

Many times spammers will attempt to gather information by web page misdirection.  This is simply done by sending a web link via e-mail, IM, or other online communication to a web page, asking to confirm or enter personal information.  This page looks like a legitimate site, however, it is not. It is using the art of deception to gather personal information to be used in malicious ways.  Always check the address bar on your browser to confirm that you are on the page you intend to be on. If you are unsure of the correct URL, do not hesitate to contact the company in question and verify the URL of the company.  In the case of Iowa Telecom’s Web Mail the address bar should read http://webmail.iowatelecom.net/src/login.php

Here is an example of a website spoofing phishing scam.

Tip of the Day

Giving out personal information via e-mail is kind of like stapling your car payment (In Cash) to the outside of the envelope and then mailing it. Chances are better than slim it will be stolen.
