Iowa Telecom Phishing Scam: “Iowatelecom Maintenance Unit”

Iowa Telecom has received reports of a phishing email scam that targets Iowa Telecom users. This is a fake email and is not sent from, or in any way associated with, Iowa Telecom. The actual phishing email is displayed below. For more information on this type of scam mail please see Phishing 101. DO NOT respond to this email with any information.

If you have responded to this email:

1. Call Iowa Telecom technical support to have your password changed. It is very important that your new password does not resemble the old password at all. The closer the new password is to the old password, the more likely they will be able to guess your new one.

2. If you see more emails like this, please feel free to send them to us, we will add them to this list to warn other customers.

Dear Iowatelecom Subscribers,

This is an Administrative Message from Iowatelecom Maintenance Unit. It is
notspam, We are currently carrying
out an upgrade on our site for it had come to our Notice that some of
our subscribers are introducing a virus into our site and it is
affecting our network.

We are trying to find out the specific subscriber. For this reason all
subscribers are to provide their Details such as First Name, Last Name,
Account User Name AND Password for us to verify and have them cleared
against this virus.

Kindly note that failure to response to this will lead to subscriber
Account termination within the next 48 hours.

Giving out personal information via e-mail is kind of like stapling your car payment (In Cash) to the outside of the envelope and then mailing it. Chances are better than slim it will be stolen.
